Through our ongoing successful relationship with SSEN we were awarded the Contract to demolish the existing buildings and the construction of a new switchroom & transformer bunds at Oxford Grid 132/33 kV Substation. Although the site isn’t deemed to be at risk of flooding the elevated switch room design allowed for easier cable installation.

The site was particularly challenging as the piled foundations were installed in close proximity to the boundary wall of the adjacent local primary school. Co-ordination with the school was required during this element. Careful planning and management was also required during the piling and construction of the transformer bunds due to the river Thames bounding the site on the east side.

Summary of the Scope:

  • New steel frame 11kV & 33kV switch house elevated on circular hollow steel piles
  • Reinforced concrete raft slab, transformer plinth, walls, sump and NER base on piled foundations
  • Design, supply & install complete LV electrical services
  • Cable trenching across live compound & install duct blocks
  • Compound construction
  • Logistically challenging site adjacent to primary school & water course
