After a competitive tendering period we were excited to be selected to work with Danish engineering company, PowerCon, & ABP to design and construct the civils package for the UK’s first commercial shore connection (cold ironing) project.

Shore power-enabled ships will now be able to plug in at Horizon Cruise Terminal and Mayflower Cruise Terminal for zero emissions at berth in the Port of Southampton. The facility is the first of its kind for docked cruise ships in the UK.

The 1st phase of the project comprised the construction of the quayside RC cable troughs, connection pits and covers and was particularly challenging due to the requirement to complete the work within a specific window before the cruise season recommenced.

The Phase two scoped composed of sub-structures, the delivery of containerised switch buildings, trenching and HV / multicore cable install.

Summary of the Scope:

  • Design & construct RC cable troughs, pits & basements
  • Design & construct containerised switchhouse substructures
  • Take delivery of containers OPS under Contract Lift
  • Cable trenching across port from OPS to cruise terminals
  • Circa 4,000m HV cable install & 6,000m multicore
  • Installation of HV cables in existing confined space culvert
  • LV installation to pumps & transformers
